Legend says that St. George was a Christian Knight from Cappadocia, who faught and killed a dragon to save the city of Sylene.
In another account, he was a member of the Roman Emperor's guard. He refused to persecute Christians, was tortured and killed outside the city walls of Nicomedia, AD 303.
King Richard the Lionhearrt brought back from the holy land, a belief in the power of St. George's intercession.
In 1415 Archbishop Chichele decreed the 23rd of April, St. George's day in England.
